I just wore him down. I didn't really have that much access to him, I don't know how I went about that. Eventually he just kind of caved." What caused the change of heart? Murray had at least one idea. "He's weak. Gene is weak," the star said to thunderous laughter. "When you challenge someone like Gene, you find his weakness. He's a great actor and he was great in the movie and all of us here hate Gene Hackman." Kidding. Probably. "Let's shag ass." The version of 'The Royal Tenebaums' that you've seen dozens of times actually isn't the version that premiered at the NY Film Festival ten years ago. That cut used many Beatles songs, for which Anderson wasn't able to secure the rights. Not that he didn't use all his connections in an attempt to get them. "I tried to bribe Paul McCartney," Paltrow said. "Sex and everything." There wasn't sex involved, but there was some... bowling? "I ended up taking him bowling, weirdly enough, with Heather Mills, his ex-wife, and Luke Wilson," she said. "Wes put me on a mission. 'You gotta get the rights!' He loved the movie, then we went bowling and he said he has nothing to do with the rights." Womp womp. Or as Murray summed it up: "Paul McCartney, too, is weak." "You made a cuckold of me." From top to bottom, the cast of 'The Royal Tenenbaums' was perfect, a fact that didn't escape Murray. "It was a great bunch. The other people are so big they didn't even have to come," Murray said, jokingly referring to Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, Danny Glover, narrator Alec Baldwin and Hackman. "It was a great group of people. I liked the little kids a lot. They were not weak, those two. They were strong. It was a good job." In the film, Murray shares many scenes with Paltrow. Did he enjoy working with the Oscar winner? "To work with Gwyneth, I really loved working with Gwyneth," Murray said to laughter. "I don't want to say anything that you'll misinterpret, but I loved working with Gwyneth. She believes what I believe." Sounds like they had a ball. "That's the last time you put a knife in me!" What makes the same group of actors keep coming back to Wes Anderson films? "I don't want to say he's weak; that puts him in a category with McCartney and Hackman," said Murray, who has worked with Anderson five times. "I don't know if there's a word that says he's someone I look forward to working with again. I don't want to say exciting. 'Exciting?' I'm animated. I think he gets things out of people that they don't get out ordinarily. He makes us all do something different." Huston, who has done three films with the director, agreed: "He's someone I like to be around. He's somebody who you're happy to be included within his circle." Paltrow never worked with Anderson again, but he still ranks as one of her most challenging film bosses. "My word would be specific," when asked to describe Anderson. "I've never worked with any director who is so precise about not only what he wants, but it's far beyond that. I remember our first meeting in SoHo, and he was just explaining the role. 'She wears black eyeliner and her hair is kinda the color of your coat' -- camal -- 'and it's about to here, and she wears Izod dresses.' It was like, 'OK, great.' I felt so comfortable because he knew exactly what he wanted. It was constructed in such precise way and I had this freedom underneath it. I didn't have to worry about what I was doing." "Baby, I'm dying. I'm sick as a dog. I'll be dead in six weeks. I'm dying." One of the many great scenes in 'The Royal Tenenbaums' is when Royal tells his estranged wife Ethel that he's dying. Except he's not. Except he is. "That was my first scene with Gene Hackman and I was particularly terrified, because I could tell he wasn't in a very good mood that morning," Huston said. "It was a very cold morning, and I was wearing kid gloves, and in rehearsal, I slapped his lapel. When we went ahead and shot it, I hit him a really good. I saw the imprint of my hand on his cheek. It was pretty good; I really liked that scene." So did Anderson, since it got Hackman to say a line he had previously refused to utter. "The take we use is when you whacked him. I remember I was trying to get him to say goddamn," said the director. "He said he didn't want to say goddamn; he wanted to say damn because, 'They'll just change it later.' I said, 'Nobody is going to change it later.' He said, 'No, not saying it.' Then when you hit him he said, 'Goddamn.'" "I don't think you're an asshole, Royal. I just think you're kind of a son of a bitch." While much of the night was spent recalling Gene Hackman horror stories, the 'Tenenbaum' group agreed that he was not nearly as bad as they made him sound. "I loved working with him," said Paltrow. "I loved being in the same scenes as him. He was kind of a bear of a guy, but I also found something very sweet and sad in there. I liked him a lot. I think he's one of the greatest actors who ever lived. To be in his presence and watch him do his thing. It's like -- you know, you're Gene Hackman, you can be in a bad fucking mood." "I'll stick up for Gene too," said Murray. "I'd hear these stories, like, 'Gene threatened to kill me today.' 'He can't kill you, you're in a union.' 'Gene threatened to take all of us and set fire to us.' 'It's a union shoot, it's NY, he can't set fire to you.'" Hackman thankfully didn't light any fires, though Murray said he understood some of the rage issues when he visited the set one day for a scene between Hackman and Luke Wilson. "[Gene] does his thing and it takes about 50-60 seconds, and Luke blew his line 13 or 14 times. Luke Wilson. I thought Luke was good? He's not good. Because at the time, he was in love with this girl over here" -- Murray pointed at an embarrassed Paltrow -- "and he couldn't think straight. So that's the problem with Gene. He had to work with Luke who was dizzy in love and Kumar Pallana, every single day." Kumar Pallana played Hackman's onscreen sidekick, the immortal Pagoda. "He had, like, a complete spaced-out high school kid and Kumar every single day. How many of you have worked with Kumar? None of you! You wouldn't be here if you had. Which raises the question: Where have all the horror movies gone? Fans in the mood for fright have just three options this month. (Four, if you count 'Dream House,' which opened on the last day of September and, judging by its poor box office performance, is going to slink out of theaters quickly.) This weekend, there's 'The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence,' which is opening in only a handful of theaters. Next weekend comes the reboot of 'The Thing.' The following week is 'Paranormal Activity 3.' Then, zip. (There's also Kevin Smith's 'Red State,' which some are calling a horror movie, though it's arguably a psychological thriller/political polemic.) So, where did the scary movies go? In part, August. In recent years, late summer has become a haven for horror. By the last two weeks in August, the studios' slates of action blockbusters are spent, but there are still genre movie fans hungry for jolts and shocks. Recent Augusts have seen such horror hits as 'The Final Destination,' 'Halloween II' and 'The Last Exorcism.' This year, in the last two weeks of August and the first two weeks of September, there were six horror releases: 'Fright Night,' 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark,' 'Evidence of a Haunting,' 'Shark Night 3D,' 'Apollo 18' and 'Creature.' The strategy seems to have backfired. With the exception of 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark,' none of these movies grossed more than $20 million. 'Paranormal Activity 3' - Trailer No. 2 Is that why there so few horror movies scheduled for October? Not really. In large measure, it's because of 'Paranormal Activity 3.' The found-footage-style horror franchise has replaced 'Saw' as the annual ritual for Halloween moviegoers. "'Saw' has dominated October for years," says Jeff Bock, a box office analyst and horror film expert at Exhibitor Relations Company. "Studios didn't dare open anything against it. ['Saw' distributor] Lionsgate really did have that month to itself." Now, however, "'Paranormal Activity' has that slot," he says. Then again, there's another possible explanation for the October dearth. "We're just having an off year." As for fans, if you feel deprived this Halloween season, there's not much consolation for you. The next mini-glut of horror movies doesn't come until January, another traditional dumping ground for movies that studios have little hope for. You'll have to keep your fears in check until then. Toronto Recap: No Drunken Spending A Good Sign For Indie Film Resurgence

Even after organizers of the 2011 Toronto Film Festival announced a 20% uptick in film deals last Friday (the festival includes foreign territories in its count), the deals kept coming. A long expected deal with Lionsgate on the Jennifer Westfeldt-directed comedy Friends With Kids finally got done, and Music Box announced overnight it had acquired the Rachel Weisz-starrer The Deep Blue Sea. Lionsgate was hotly pursuing another film, the Midnight Madness sensation Youre Next, which of all the festival films seems to have the best chance of approaching the box office turned in by Toronto 2010s breakout Insidious. There were deals by the dozen. Still, can you call the Toronto acquisitions marketplace “solid” when no films got bought so far by The Weinstein Company, Sony Pictures Classics, Focus Features, or Fox Searchlight (yeah, I revealed that they bought Shame during Toronto, but it was a deal all but sealed in Venice), or for that matter FilmDistrict, Open Road or Relativity Media, each of which jumped into the distribution business to release films that can play up upwards of 2000 screens? Buyers and sellers said it was a pretty good festival at least. One filled with mostly small deals and a show of distributor discipline that is a positive sign for an indie film sector that just started pulling out of a nosedive this time last year. I’m not sure what Friends With Kids cost (I’d heard low seven-figures when I first wrote Lionsgate was chasing it) or what You’re Next will bring, but at the festival close yesterday, the only certified multiple million dollar deal by a distributor was CBS Films rumored $5 million plus deal for the Lasse Hallstrom-directed Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Some felt CBS Flms spent high, but new divisions often pay a premium when bidding against more established distribution rivals, and now CBS Films needed a strong title with which to prove its mettle and now it has a good one. Mickey Liddell (who last year acquired Biutiful) notched the other major multi-million deal with the William Friedkin-directed Killer Joe, and will rent a distributor to put it out. And Luc Besson got his wish to have the performances of Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis showcased this Oscar season in a deal with upstart Cohen Media Group to distribute The Lady. It was clear money wasnt a priority for Besson; he wanted an Oscar qualifying berth and stateside release to go with the international release plans that his EuropaCorp have in place, and got it shortly after his film premiered. Of the other films atop buyers lists, some were disappointing, buyers said; others played well, but had factors that left distributors questioning whether they warranted big P&A spends. That is always the trouble with acquiring finished films and underscored for buyers the importance of pre-buying rights before movies start shooting, where you can have some influence in what goes on the screen. Only a few pre-sale titles screened footage at Toronto, including the Derek Cianfrance-directed The Place Beyond The Pines with Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. So far, no one has met the $4 million asking price for U.S. rights, but I bet they come close by AFM. Had the $15 million George Clooney-directed Gosling-starrer The Ides of March come to the festival without a distributor, several buyers told me an 8-figure bidding war for domestic rights could have resulted. Distributors are used to evaluating the challenges of finished films playing for the first time at festivals. In the case of Shame, some balked at the demand they couldn’t change a frame and had to come out this year, but not Fox Searchlight, which will chase an Oscar for Michael Fassbender. In the case of Friends with Kids, some potential buyers told me they questioned the decision by director Westfeldt to cast herself in the pivotal role, alongside Jon Hamm, Adam Scott and Kristen Wiig. A few buyers told me they liked the premise and said it had crowd-pleasing laughs, but because Westfeldt isn’t an established star, it made the film more of a commercial risk. Lionsgate was in the mix early (Hamm is the cornerstone star of Lionsgate’s Mad Men), but it never turned into a real bidding war. Same with 360, which buyers found a challenge to market. Festival organizers certainly didnt make it easy on buyers or sellers by scheduling a nonstop barrage of the top acquisition titles that first Saturday. I think the festival did this deliberately to create a frenzy atmosphere, but it only made all of our lives difficult, said one vet. You saw buyers coming and going in the middle of screenings of good movies, and a lot of movies had to be screened a second time. It didnt help anybody. Ive heard the log jam occurred because sellers push festival organizers so hard to get prime Saturday berths, and festival organizers won’t tell them what they’re playing up against. Some said they will consider making better use of Friday or even that first Thursday, even though many acquisition execs are just arriving. Nobody thinks the top distribution execs will stay beyond Monday; they traditionally leave junior executives to watch end of fest premiere titles. The lack of major distributors left the field to the boutiques, which pay smaller minimum guarantees and launch films in less sexy platform theatrical and premium VOD strategies. In an article on Magnolias 10th anniversary, co-owner Todd Wagner and co-founder Eamonn Bowles described how films from All Good Things to Two Lovers to obscure titles like The Oxford Murders and 13 Assassins routinely gross millions on Utra VOD outings, often dwarfing theatrical returns and requiring less P&A. The festival was a good one for VOD buyers, and though the new division that former Magnolia execs Tom Quinn and Jason Janego are starting for The Weinstein Company hasnt notched a sale yet, those executives were chasing films and could make some deals in the coming weeks. The VOD downside for filmmakers and actors is mainly ego: they miss the sizzle of theatrical P&A campaigns of TV and newspaper ads, even if that money spent isn’t cost effective. Boutique distributors have been gobbling up Toronto titles as distributors like Magnolia and IFC have bought multiple festival films. Because the casts are strong, there will be inevitable deals for films like the Oren Moverman-directed Rampart with Woody Harrelson, the Fernando Meirelles-directed 360 with Anthony Hopkins, the Sarah Polley-directed Take This Waltz with Michelle Williams, Violet & Daisy by Precious scribe Geoffrey Fletcher and genre titles like Lovely Molly by Blair Witch co-director Eduardo Sanchez. But you can bet none of those deals will break the bank and the longer they take, the more leverage swings toward buyers.
